Miami Man

Jacked Street Fashion:

place:
Wood Tavern, Wynwood

face:
Rafael Semidey

local stepping stone in the underground Miami music scene...

Birth:
Peru

Where you've been:
school for audio engineering

Where you can be found:
sitting in a studio, a warehouse

What keeps you busy:
Right now i've been producing my bands record.

Local pride:
A lot of people like to say that there isn't a real music scene here in Miami but it's young and blossoming. There is a lot of talent. I want to add color to the town. Something to take home and show to your mom. Not House or Latin but miami's underground.

Job by nature (nature of your work):
Very social but also very detached. It's also not very real. Lots of talk.

Motive:
Building electronic. Taking the sound of a live band and transporting it to something sonically unique.

First thing that you learned in the music industry:
You have to smile a lot at assholes whether you like it or not. Say yes and smoke pot whether or not.

Favorite sounds:
Gorillas and the Flaming Lips. Beck is the most underrated band of our time.

Your band:
No bound shit. First photo was shot in the trunk of a Lincoln in the Everglades.

Tie your shoes or sing the blues:
Sing the blues. Sing the blues while tying my shoes.

What are you currently thinking:
Peace of mind, this is my first night off in months.

Let's:
Buy another drink.

May I...

Sounds floating around that have been captivating me up to and through this marvelous month of May...

The Lumineers

and when she stood, she stood tall...

Hometown: Denver, CO

Influences: Talking Heads, Bob Dylan, Bright Eyes, Ryan Adams, Tom Petty, Kings of Leon, Leonard Cohen, Fleetwood Mac, Radiohead

A certain peace and ease flows over me while listening to this trio. Their sound transports me to a forgiving place. I'm not exactly sure what it is about them. They give me a feeling of acceptance with the present and a strange trust in the future. A fuck you to the daily tornado that twists inside. Give me this and a glass of wine and i'm feeling divine..

Simply put, unreal soul that keeps me believing in the truth of this animal being. This woman is a badass.

You Won't

it always ends the same...

Hometown: Cambridge, Massachusetts

Description:
"sticks out from the monotony of repetitive acoustic warbling to bring something truly rare to their genre. Rooted in Josh Ardnouse’s twangy singing style, the duo brings to mind Bob Dylan’s earlier works, giving every tune and beautiful lyric a raw and heartfelt edge. Additionally, to create the whimsical instrumentation found on their new album, Skeptic Goodbye, Ardnouse and band mate Raky Sastri incorporate everything from electric and acoustic guitar to street signs and other non-musical objects. Self-produced and recorded in the Massachusetts woods, the release doesn’t use any over-produced vocals or overly fine-tuned guitars. In its stead are clap-a-long tunes, pure guitar and vocal pairings stripped down with love and layered ethereal sounds."

These boys put an enormous smile on my face and they make my heart race. I fell in love instantly when I first came across them. They combine honesty and innocence, reminiscent of childhood days, with a witty matured mindset that hasn't totally given up and given into this worlds jaded nature. They speak of the timeless cravings of the heart that we all somehow grow to neglect or annihilate. They seem to be laid back dudes who have grown up but still hold onto an understanding of what it means to enjoy what you're doing and not lose a certain fragility. Their catchy yet insightful nature is what captivates me. They're not trying to be anything but themselves.

Daughter

throw me in a landfill...

Hometown: North London

Description:
"Elena and Igor have an ear to create space within their music, moments where their instruments can breath and the listener can fully appreciate the beauty that is being played out before them. The poignant combination of Elena's lingering vocals and the delicate acoustic/electric guitars demonstrate how simplicity in music is something to be applauded."

This lady has an incredibly captivating voice. It voids your core to the point where all you can do is sit silently and let it float right on through you. A refreshingly poignant and stunningly heartbreaking sound. The first time I heard the track 'Landfill' my heart skipped a few beats.

'Landfill'

Of Monsters and Men

my head is an animal...

Hometown: Reykjav√≠k, Iceland

Description:
"We used to be birds but now we're monsters" -OMAM

"Of Monsters and Men is an amiable group of day dreamers who craft folkie pop songs. Their music is as fantastical as it is pretty. For inspiration, they often reference random stories they’ve read. The chanting, tribal “Six Weeks” was inspired by the true tale of American frontiersman Hugh Glass, seemingly left for dead after 86ing a bear that attacked him."

This band is infectious. Initially I was only mildly intrigued. I haven't stopped listening to their record 'My Head Is An Animal' for over a month and a half now. Each track has a life of its own expressed through a unique tale told. It's like reading a childhood storybook that emotes wisdom of past lives and difficult adventures to come. Their songs touch the fragile angles of the heart, whether it be confusion pertaining to the instability and insanity we sometimes feel that stirs in our minds, or the conflict placed within our hearts. Almost everyday I catch myself totally entranced by this band. A guilty fan.

High On You

"This is thy hour O Soul, thy free flight into the wordless" -Walt Whitman

"On the 19th September 1783 Pilatre De Rozier, a scientist, launched the first hot air balloon called 'Aerostat Reveillon'. The passengers were a sheep, a duck and a rooster and the balloon stayed in the air for a grand total of 15 minutes before crashing back to the ground.

The first manned attempt came about 2 months later on 21st November, with a balloon made by 2 French brothers, Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier. The balloon was launched from the centre of Paris and flew for a period of 20 minutes. The birth of hot air ballooning!"

For many, a hot air balloon ride is a tale told or a preconceived notion of the senses. An event we've visualized or heard about but hardly something experienced first hand. Last month, I was able to take a trip 1000ft up into the air with my dearest lady, Miss Amanda Perez Castro. She surprised me with this unique opportunity for my birthday.

From beginning to end, the flight was an awakening of the senses. Floating in a basket no larger than the size of two small bathroom stalls, we got especially comfortable with the three other guests.

A fear of heights has always been an enigma of mine. Letting go and trusting where the winds would blow was a journey through silent realization. The peaceful nature that I felt and utter stillness of time was something I will never forget.

Balloonist prayer..

"The winds have welcomed you with softness.
The sun has blessed you with his warm hands.
You have flown so high and so well,
That the gods have joined you in your laughter
and set you back again into the
loving arms of Mother Earth."
